Can a Smart Workout Change Your Life?

I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback since Fox Business News interviewed me about WorkoutEngine – Your online personal trainer.
The interview seems to have struck a nerve with many people who are apparently unhappy with how they look and feel… or simply want a new approach to working out.
Here are the top 5 requests from women, in no particular order:
1. “I want to lose weight. Can you design a workout for this?”
2. “Please help me shape and tone.”
3. “Help! I need to firm up before summer.”
4. “My team coach said I need a workout to help me get stronger.”
5. “My kids are wearing me out. Please give me a workout to help me feel better.”
Here are the top 5 requests from men:
1. “I want to lose weight right now.”
2. “I want to gain muscle and lose my love handles.”
3. “How do I get ripped, six-pack abs like that guy on MTV.”
4. “I want to work out but I have a bad back.”
5. “I need a workout I can do at home before work. And I don’t have any equipment.”
Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I’ve been designing workout programs since middle school (seriously). Back then I was a voracious reader of anything health and fitness.
Fast forward 25 years and here I am. Still fired up about how a smart workout program can literally transform your life. I was fortunate enough to have a few influential coaches, and a very supportive family, who encouraged me to follow my passion for designing workouts to help others meet their goals.
Problem is, there are so many fitness magazines, workout DVDs, exercise books, and personal trainers out there… How do you know who to listen to? What do you believe?
And with so many workout choices available, why are most people still unhappy with how they look. Still searching for a workout plan to help them lose fat, have more energy, make the sports team, or just feel better.
I’m no rocket scientist, but I have a theory as to why so many people are overweight, out-of-shape, and struggling to create a better life—and how to start living again. It’s based on a secret I learned in graduate school.
A professor told me something I’ll never forget:
“The difference between a rut and a grave is the depth of the hole.”
Think about this for a moment.
“The difference between a rut and a grave is the depth of the hole.”
In other words, millions of people are walking through life in a coma. Not really living, but merely shuffling from one task to another in a zombie-like trance. These are wonderful, enthusiastic folks who are hypnotized into a stupor by excessive body fat, little sleep, poor nutrition, and little or no physical activity.
Millions of walking dead.
But there is hope. And the formula is straightforward.
If you take one of the “walking dead” and give him or her smart workouts, simple nutrition strategies, and a good night’s sleep… they start to live again.
If you can improve just a few percent, you will snap out of your trance and realize how good life really is.
All you need to get started is a custom-tailored workout plan and a good attitude.
Sounds crazy, but a personalized workout becomes the anchor of your week. Treat your workout like an important meeting that you can’t miss. Once you give your exercise program this type of priority, it becomes easy to follow a portion-controlled nutrition plan, get enough sleep, and manage your stress (a smart workout is your best defense against worry and depression).
